HAMPTON, Ga. - Goodyear likely will have to return to Atlanta Motor Speedway next January to select a different tire than the one Nextel Cup teams have tested on Monday and Tuesday at the 1.5-mile oval.

Some teams have worn their tires out before the end of a fuel run, which is about 50-55 laps.

"We're pretty comfortable with what we've seen," said Goodyear's Greg Stucker. "[But] it appears the setup on the car of tomorrow is still pretty aggressive from a wear perspective.

"We'll probably test again and try ... to get more wear resistant. I think everybody is comfortable with the level of grip they have. Our target is a gas stop [for wear], and not everybody is able to get there right now."

The left-side tires used during the test were the same as the ones used in the traditional car for the race last Sunday. The right-side tires are not the same - the compound is the one used by the trucks this past weekend.

What will change (right sides, left sides or both) in the future is still to be determined.

"The car of tomorrow seems to be responsive to some additional left-side grip," Stucker said. "If we have to take some right-side grip away in order to improve the tread wear, we might be able to get some of that back with the left side. That is one of the things we will look at."

Testing started this morning with temperatures in the 40s, which typically leads to a little more grip than normal, said Toyota program manager Andy Graves.

Goodyear has at least two more tire tests left this year. It will test Nov. 5 at California Speedway with Hendrick Motorsports and David Green as the driver.

It also will test Dec. 11-12 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with teams to be determined.
