FORT WORTH, Texas - Danny O'Quinn is neck-and-neck with John Andretti for rookie of the year honors in the Busch Series, and that would be a big accomplishment for a driver with mostly short-track experience.
It also would help O'Quinn stay in the minds of prospective employers.
O'Quinn doesn't know whether he'll be back with Roush Racing next season but hopes to return after a rookie season in which he sits 18th in points despite not competing in two races.
"I definitely want to get something going here," O'Quinn said Friday. "Hopefully everything will work out and I will be able to do the same thing that I'm doing now. You know how this business is, anything can happen.
"I don't know 100 percent sure what I'm going to do here next year, but I would love to stay on."
The rookie has had a solid string of performances with a 14th, 18th, fifth and ninth leading into the Texas weekend.
"Here lately, we've shown potential that we can run good," O'Quinn said. "First of the year, it wasn't the greatest. I know they didn't expect much from us, but I expected a lot out of us then. ... The second half of the year, we've shown we can do it.
"Given another year in the same situation, I could perform 100 percent better than I did this year."
O'Quinn said he believes Roush Racing is the best NASCAR team and he hopes things can work out and the team can find a sponsor.
"I think if we run good, everything will take care of itself," O'Quinn said. "My main focus is dealing with Roush right now. We'll see what happens here.
"If we can't make things work, then that time will come. I think everything will be fine."
- Mentioned Drivers:
- John Andretti
