BAMBI MATTILA / NASCAR SCENE /
Ward Burton, returning to the Nextel Cup Series after an almost two-year sabbatical, said he was happy with a 26th-place finish in Sunday's Subway 500 at Mnartinsville Speedway.
Burton, who caused a midrace caution with a spin in Turn 2, was the last driver on the lead lap in his debut with Morgan-McClure Motorsports. He raced in the top-10 at times in the event.
"We were lucky enough to get back on the lead lap and come back and finish on the lead lap at Martinsville even though I was the 'lucky dog,'" Burton said. "We'll take that. I had a ball. I think they did a good job with the car."
Both Burton and team owner Larry McClure said that their agreement was only for Martinsville but that they hope the relationship could develop into a full-time ride.
