CONCORD, N.C. - The right-rear shock on Kurt Busch's car failed to decompress during post-qualifying inspection, causing his qualifying time to be disallowed Thursday, Penske Racing South President Don Miller said.

Busch had qualified third-quickest in the field but will now have to start 42nd in the Bank of America 500 on Saturday at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

"What probably happened, either a shim broke or something got loose inside the shock to bind it up because it wasn't moving in either direction," Miller said Friday morning. "It won't go up, and it won't go down."

Miller said NASCAR has the shock and eventually will dissect it to figure out what happened.

"I don't think we gained any advantage, but that's the rule," Miller said. "They were right, and we were wrong."
