WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. - While it's not yet official that Jeremy Mayfield will drive for Bill Davis Racing next year, Michael Waltrip said the driver won't be part of his three-car program in 2007.
Fired by Evernham Motorsports last week, neither Mayfield nor his business agent have returned calls from NASCAR Scene. But sources at Indianapolis indicated that Mayfield had struck a deal to team with Dave Blaney at BDR.
Last month at New Hampshire, Waltrip had said that Mayfield would be his top candidate to join a program that will also include Dale Jarrett.
But Sunday morning at Watkins Glen, Waltrip said Mayfield's out of the equation.
"He and I have pretty much figured out that it wasn't going to work out," Waltrip said. "I don't know where he's going to wind up. But he's looking at other deals, I think."
The search, meanwhile, continues for Waltrip.
"We've talked to a few guys and are working with the sponsors to try to get the guy that they want and couple that with the guy we want," Waltrip said. "That process has taken a little bit longer than we hoped it would. But nothing has happened to this point to where we don't think we can get a cat that we can be successful with."
- Mentioned Drivers:
- Dale Jarrett
