Wheeler a consultant? Could be
May
26
When H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler announced his retirement as president and general manager of Lowe’s Motor Speedway and president of Speedway Motorsports Inc., he made it clear he would no longer have anything to do with either entity.
Which fueled speculation that his relationship with his boss, Bruton Smith, had gone sour – or that it had been strained for quite some time.
Now free to follow other pursuits, Wheeler continues to be the subject of speculation. People wonder just what he’ll do now. Will he find another position in racing or will he indeed just go fishing or ride his bicycles?
Wheeler has already told us he intends to write a book – given his wealth of experiences over the years, it should be a good one – and he’ll continue with his television program.
Beyond that, he pretty much intends to leave his options open.
Given that he would have preferred to spend another year at Lowe’s serving as a consultant, I don’t think it would be hard to imagine him doing so for other tracks or even NASCAR.
In fact, I would not be surprised if that happens. It’s not hard to envision, say, International Speedway Corp., tapping into Wheeler’s experience and imagination to enhance race promotions.
And I don’t think it’s beyond reason to expect NASCAR to do the same thing. Why not? Seems to me it’s a good policy to use every resource available and Wheeler might just be available.
Of course, Wheeler might have his own plans – as of yet unrevealed.
Still, if we see him serving in a consultant’s role in the near future, we shouldn’t be entirely surprised.
Wheeler is going to do plenty of fishing and bicycling, that’s for sure. But the bet here is he’ll be doing a lot more.
