Busch's best bet: stick to Sprint Cup

Apr 24
I think it’s safe to say that Kyle Busch is as hot as bacon sizzling in a frying pan.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver won his third consecutive Nationwide Series race at Mexico City this past weekend.

On the Sprint Cup circuit he’s won once and in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series he’s been victorious twice.

More impressive, the younger of NASCAR’s Busch brothers is currently the leader in the truck series point standings. He’s second in Sprint Cup and third in the Nationwide Series.

Now, that’s hot.

Busch’s performances have led to speculation about how much racing he will do this year. Since he will skip this weekend’s truck race at Kansas City for logistical reasons, it’s obvious that series won’t get his full attention.

But what about the Nationwide Series? With three victories in nine races and just 66 points separating Busch from leader Clint Bowyer, speculation is that Busch might compete for the championship.

Busch admits it’s under consideration, but for now, it’s still a race-by-race proposition. He said a decision would be made shortly.

There’s no doubt Busch would be up to the rigors of racing on two circuits in one season. It’s been done before – and Carl Edwards, Clint Bowyer, David Ragan and David Reutimann are attempting it this year.

And, undoubtedly, the lure of becoming both a Sprint Cup and Nationwide series champion in 2008 is enticing.

I certainly won’t be part the decision-making process at Gibbs Racing, but I would offer this opinion:

Concentrate on a Sprint Cup championship. If that means competing in selected Nationwide Series events, so be it.

Busch is in a unique position, one filled with irony. If he can win the title, it will obviously be the first of his career and it will happen in only his fourth full season. He will bring Toyota a championship in only its second year on the circuit.

Then there’s this: Busch was the driver “removed” from Hendrick Motorsports to make way for Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if Busch were to win a championship in his first season away from Hendrick?

I have no doubt Busch has thought about that. To make it happen, Gibbs and Busch should give their full measure to the Sprint Cup circuit.

Of course, they might think differently.
