A test session at Lowe's is not a bad idea at all

Apr 10
I think Humpy Wheeler has the right idea.

The president of Lowe’s Motor Speedway has encouraged NASCAR to hold a test session at his track on May 5-6, prior to the May 17 Sprint All-Star race.

His reasoning is that he wants his track to play host to the best racing it can during the month of May. He suggests that testing is the only way teams can get the most out of their cars – which are the new ones mandated by NASCAR. I suspect many others might agree.

It’s already been established that many Sprint Cup teams have had their problems with the new car on the 1.5-mile tracks, with the exception of driver Carl Edwards and Roush Fenway Racing.

Lowe’s is a 1.5-mile track and the last thing Wheeler, the enterprising promoter, wants to see are dull races at his speedway – heaven knows, there have been enough of them already.

So it follows that he would request NASCAR allow open testing, especially since the new car will be raced at Lowe’s for the first time.

If I were in his position, I would ask for the same thing if I knew teams had struggled to find the right setup for the new car on the intermediate tracks and complained loudly about their perceived inability to find it.

While NASCAR has previously, and rightfully, conducted test sessions at tracks that have already held an event this season, there is the argument that it hasn’t done enough. So why not take Wheeler up on his offer?

I am fully aware that Wheeler is the master showman and I suspect that he and his publicity minions have no doubt noticed that an open test session would allow them a means to acquire still more headlines and air time.

But isn’t that what NASCAR should do?

To me, there seems to be no reason why NASCAR should not accept the offer for another test session. The teams would likely welcome it.

If Lowe’s Motor Speedway is the immediate beneficiary of it – and it certainly may not be  – it seems to me that any opportunity to make the new car something better than we see now on the 1.5-mile tracks should indeed be taken.
