Skinner go-to guy when it comes to qualifying

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – If one’s team absolutely needed to make a race, I’d recommend putting Mike Skinner in the car for qualifying.
Skinner has become the go-to guy when it’s time to spark a team. For a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team outside the top 35 in owners points, one that absolutely must make the race, Skinner has become the one to watch.
He made the race with the Bill Davis Racing team at Las Vegas Motor Speedway through a qualifying effort. A week later, he moved over to Red Bull Racing to evaluate the No. 84 team normally driven by AJ Allmendinger.
He’s made all three races he’s attempted with that team as well, though one was the rained-out session at Bristol that he made on points.
Skinner made a heated run for the Craftsman Truck Series title last season and is seventh in those series points this year. He seems to have found a home in the truck series.
But he’s developing a second career as a go-to guy helping Cup teams that are trying to improve. He’d certainly be the driver I’d select.
