Roush Fenway drivers poised to dominate at PIR
Apr
9
Watch out for the Roush Fenway Racing drivers this weekend.
Last year, as the team struggled to figure out the new car and gain ground in it, the group started improving in the second half of the season. At Phoenix, the series next-to-last race, the group came alive.
Roush Fenway earned two of the top-three finishing positions with Greg Biffle second and Matt Kenseth, who led a race-high 93 laps, third. Carl Edwards led 87 laps (the second most in the race), but ended up 42nd after an engine failure.
Fast forward to this season, when the organization has built on that strength. The group has been stellar on the 1.5-mile tracks – Edwards has won two of the three races on those tracks – and now returns to the place where they showed last season that they had finally figured out the new car.
So watch out for them this weekend. Edwards and Biffle clearly have things working well for them this season. Kenseth is always a threat at any track. And David Ragan and Jamie McMurray have found improving fortunes as this season progressed.
Certainly other teams, such as Hendrick Motorsports with recent Phoenix winners Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon, understand this 1-mile track as well, but this weekend, Phoenix could be a Roush Fenway showdown.
Will this be the weekend the entire organization steps up and dominates a track? I certainly wouldn’t rule out the possibility.
