NASCAR should add a break before Chase begins
Jul
15
Once more, we are in the heart of the NASCAR season, with the race to the championship field heating up, and the Sprint Cup drivers get a needed respite. But once again, this is the last break that the series will have until the end of the year.
One has to wonder why.
It's not a new concept, but wouldn't it be great to have a break between the race at Richmond, after which the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup field is set, and the opening event of the 10-race title-determining segment of the season?
That would give the teams and drivers who have made the Chase - many after a frantic last-minute rush with the tight race to get into the field this season - a chance to catch their breath and get ready for that 10-race run. Or a chance to test at a non-sanctioned track to maybe learn something at a track that eluded them earlier in the season. Or a chance to spend a little time sleeping in their own beds before the zig-zagging cross-country run begins.
The other teams could do the same. After all, the Chase will be set, but there are still battles to be run. Teams have set goals of being in the top 15, in the top 20 or locked into the top 35, depending on their level of success and building process at this point. They'll be gearing up for a final push as well.
Wouldn't it be nice if they had a little breathing room in there? Wouldn't it be nice if they didn't have to spend 17 race weekends - most of them three-day events - toiling without relief as the championship unfolds?
