Talladega has the prescription
Apr
19
Dissatisfied with racing that you consider not quite up to snuff? Relax. Talladega’s coming.
Idle this week while its Nationwide brethren race in Mexico City (which is outside the width of the nation, oddly enough), the Sprint Cup series gathers again at Talladega Superspeedway in the outback of Alabama next week for a Sunday of racing that typically borders on the insane.
There have been bad races and runaways and caution-flagged finishes at NASCAR’s biggest track, but the odds are certainly in the other direction.
Dollar for dollar, the entertainment value at Talladega, where the racing – albeit artificially manufactured by restrictor plates – is wackily close and generally quite antisocial, is quite high. Few sights in international motorsports match the view of dozens of cars in a tight pack sweeping through Talladega’s high-banked turns.
Even if the racing becomes a little ho-hum, there usually are enough over-the-top fans doing over-the-top things at Talladega to keep interest levels high.
Try it sometime.
Racing’s back.
