Ragan looking for one more spot
Sep
1
Chances are David Ragan won’t sleep too well this week.
There’s a big line drawn through most versions of the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings, and Ragan is on the wrong side of it – barely. He enters Saturday night’s Richmond race 17 points behind 12th-place driver Clint Bowyer, and that means Ragan is 17 points away from qualifying for the Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Ragan, a young driver whose early impatience has morphed into solid consistency and a realistic approach to racing, can qualify for the Chase for the first time, and such an accomplishment would be a significant boost to his career.
Although Ragan, winless in his brief career, would be a longshot to win the championship, a spot in the Chase would add sparkle to his credentials and would underline the intelligence behind Jack Roush’s decision to put Ragan in Mark Martin’s old ride.
Will Ragan make it? The thinking here is yes. He’ll open the race with butterflies, but he’ll close it in style as one of the sport’s not-so-dirty dozen.
