Extra incentive?

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR’s ruling tribunal has spoken, and Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart are under the dreaded probation sword.
In the past, this has meant goof up again, and we’ll throw jelly beans at you. Beat you with a wet noodle. Tie your shoelaces together.
Now the word is out that, this time, probation means watch your behind. We’re coming to get you if you mess up again.
This remains to be seen, of course. I’ll believe it when I see it.
In the meantime, the firestorm over the latest Busch-Stewart incident has created an interesting storyline leading into Thursday’s qualifying races and Sunday’s Daytona 500. Both drivers have had very good cars here, and it wouldn’t be surprising if either got an extra emotional bump from the unpleasantries of last week and jumped into victory lane.
Stay tuned.
In the meantime, everyone is left to wonder if Stewart really punched Busch in that NASCAR hauler meeting. All indications are that he did. If that is the case, the punishment should have been significantly stronger. Hitting a competitor – or anyone for that matter – in the narrow confines of the NASCAR mobile office with several NASCAR officials on hand? One would expect a tougher response.
