A NASCAR trade deadline?
Aug
1
Thursday was a big day for Major League Baseball. Not because of the games played. Because of the trades made.
Superstars Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox and Ken Griffey Jr. of the Cincinnati Reds were traded to other teams in the mad rush toward the trading deadline as contending teams tried to bolster their lineups for the season's closing months. There were other big trades recently involving key players such as Rich Harden, Pudge Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira.
It was a breathtaking sort of period for baseball fans, particularly those who wake up daily with thoughts of the pennant races foremost in their minds.
What if NASCAR operated in similar fashion? Especially as the Chase approaches, would you trade for key team players – an ace tire changer, a smart fuel-mileage strategist, even an engine builder – if you thought the short-term quality of your team would be boosted?
If your team clearly was going to miss the Chase, would you trade away one of your top crew people to a Chase-level team in exchange for two young tire changers and a jackman to be named later?
Most importantly, perhaps, would you trade to get Brett Favre as quarterback? He apparently still wants to play.

Aug 2, 2008 at 7:51 AMCar owners like Rick Hendrick and Joe Gibbs pride themselves with employing great people. They care about them and their families.I can't see them just dumping a guy to make the Chase. However if he's not getting the job done after several races,he may have to go.I maybe wrong but I haven't seen alot of that happening in NASCAR.
