Wouldn't a Petty in victory lane be fitting?
Feb

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – No offense to anyone who is a fan of drivers with the last name Earnhardt, but it would be most appropriate for someone other than an Earnhardt to win the 50th Daytona 500.
Kyle Petty.
OK, sure, Petty probably won’t win Sunday, mainly because he hasn’t shown a lot of speed during Speedweeks.
But for fans with short memories, the Petty name has been much more synonymous with Daytona International Speedway than any other name in NASCAR – short of France.
Lee Petty won the first race in a photo finish. And then son Richard became famous by winning seven more Daytona 500s. And Richard Petty was involved in two of the race’s most famous finishes: 1976, when he and David Pearson crashed within sight of the checkered flag (with Pearson winning), and in 1979, when Petty won the race while Bobby and Donnie Allison duked it out with Cale Yarborough.
Kyle Petty has never won a Daytona 500, and I, for one, would love to see him get one this year in the 50th version of this race.
Won’t happen, of course, but I’d still love to see it.
