Nationwide Series seems to be a hit in Montreal
Aug
2
MONTREAL – A few observations while I sit in the centre media at the track located on L’île Notre-Dame:
My colleague Mike Hembree suggested Circuit Gilles Villeneuve should hold a Sprint Cup race in the future, and I don’t disagree. Crowds at the 2.709-mile road course FRIDAY were bigger than some Nationwide and Craftsman Truck series races this year. And the stands are packed again Saturday, and it’s not even noon.
Andrew Ranger won the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race after a thrilling duel with J.R. Fitzpatrick, and the crowd loved it. Ranger is a Canadian, and they clearly love their home-country drivers here.
Braun Racing public-relations representative Stacey Thompson said she felt like Britney Spears this weekend. Why? Thompson is working with Canadian Jacques Villeneuve, and media have followed his every move. Villeneuve is the Dale Earnhardt Jr. of Canada, and if he wins Saturday, the grandstands may not survive.
A sign outside Joey Logano’s garage shows his nickname “Sliced Bread.” Scott Wimmer’s team is parked next to Logano’s, and the sign outside Wimmer’s garage says “Sliced Cheese.” Wimmer, of course, is from Wisconsin.
This weekend marks the first time I’ve ever taken public transportation to a race. Wish I could do that more.
Nationwide qualifying is slated to begin at 12:10 p.m. EDT, with the session broken into nine groups. The last two groups boast an
international flavor: four Canadians, three Americans, an Italian and an Australian.

Aug 4, 2008 at 11:45 AMIt was one of the best NASCAR races I've watched. Period. Decent road course (maybe a bit too flat but not bad considering it's on man-made terrain). The rain tires work. No surprise there as both the tread design and compound are well proven in other types of racing. I kind of agree that it should host a Cup race. Except. The Glen is one of my favorite - carved out of the countryside you can sometimes imagine you're running down country lanes. But perhaps the most interesting reaction can from two friends hat live in Washington state and in the NYC area. After I told them about the rain racing each tracked down someone that recorded it. While they still don't like oval tracks both are planning to attend a NASCAR road race.
