Bigger than the Daytona 500

Feb 11

MADISON, Ill. Carl Edwards said his victory last year in the Busch Series race at Gateway International Raceway was as important to him as winning the Daytona 500.

Is he nuts?

It might seem that way, but you have to understand where Edwards is coming from. And that’s here. Here in the shadow of the Gateway Arch across the Mississippi River. Here at the track where Edwards could see but could only dream of.

Daytona? No, that was way too far off. Gateway was, too, but at least he could see it. Edwards is from Columbia, Mo., a two-hour drive on Interstate 70 from Gateway.

And like drivers all across the country, Edwards learned his trade on the bullrings, at tracks in southern Missouri and Illinois. To him, this is home. And it¹s always good to win at home.

Ask Tony Stewart what Indianapolis means. Or Scott Wimmer what Milwaukee means. Or Kenny and Mike Wallace about Gateway.

Your hometown track is everything.

So expect Edwards to try as hard as he ever has in Saturday’s Gateway 250. No, it’s not a Nextel Cup race. But it might as well be the Indy 500, Daytona 500 and 24 Hours of LeMans to Edwards.
