Is this a sign?

Feb 11

MADISON, Ill. – The Chicago Cubs will win the World Series this year. What else can one assume after Reed Sorenson’s victory in the Gateway 250 Busch Series race at Gateway International Raceway on Saturday night?

Sorenson, you may remember, helped sing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” last Monday at Wrigley Field – and it’s “Field,” not “Stadium,” Jeff Gordon. The Cubs won that night, by the way.

Start the week in Wrigley with a win and end the week in a Wrigley-sponsored car in victory lane. Hmmm. And in Illinois, no less, a few miles away from the home of the team Cubs fans love to hate: The St. Louis Cardinals.

OK, so maybe I’m a reaching. As a lifelong Cubs fan, you look for hope anywhere. That’s what happens when you go 98 years without a World Series. Sorenson’s winless streak wasn’t nearly as long, though it had been two years since he last won. But when asked what it meant to finally win again, Sorenson deflected praise toward his Chip Ganassi Racing team. It’s not all about the driver, folks.

And Sorenson knows it. But on this night, the team and the driver got the job done. Good for Sorenson.

Now, please, can the Cubs do the same thing?
