Stepping up to the plate?
Feb
27
Geepers, weepers. So, Michael Waltrip would like Auto Club Speedway to become a restrictor-plate track? Makes sense. The guy’s got four wins in 691 starts, and they’ve all come on plate tracks. Guess you’ve got to play to your strengths, right?
While I’m thinking only one of the drivers would welcome more plate racing on the schedule (hey, Mikey likes it!), the guess here is it would be a whole lot more enjoyable for fans in California.
Not every restrictor-plate event features the Big One, as evidenced by this year’s Daytona 500, but just the threat of it helps create real anticipation and excitement in the days leading up to the race. Think Auto Club Speedway President Gillian Zucker could use some of that?
Unless you’re one of the rare NASCAR fans already getting your money’s worth by seeing a celebrity or two at Auto Club Speedway, restrictor-plate racing could well be worth your future price of admission.
Not that I think this is happening any time soon, but it’s worth considering, at least where speedway officials are concerned.
What have they got to lose?
