Ready for some road-course racing
Jun
20
Sunday’s Sprint Cup event at Infineon Raceway marks the 16th race on the 2008 schedule, and it’s high time we had a road-course event. There’s been enough chatter about the new car’s struggles on the intermediate tracks, but that should not be a problem Sunday in Sonoma.
And there’s this: I actually like road-course races. To some in the sport, they’re a necessary evil, something to be endured and then forgotten about as quickly as possible.
To me, Infineon Raceway and Watkins Glen help reveal the true personalities of competitors. Surely, no one would complain too much about another run-in like the one Juan Pablo Montoya and Kevin Harvick had at The Glen last year.
Montoya will look to defend his win at Infineon from a year ago, another story line to follow this weekend. But you’ve also got the usual helping of road-course ringers, the always-popular Boris Said returning to Cup action and the threat of Robby Gordon doing some damage (whether good or bad).
Part of me longs to be in Sonoma – and that has nothing to do with the vino because I’m not a big wine drinker – but I’ll get my road-racing fix come August in Watkins Glen.
One event now in June, one in August and hopefully in the future, a third road-course race will be added to the Chase in, say, October.
