Jimmie Johnson's one track mind on racing, not basketball
Apr

See you in a few, boys.
Jimmie Johnson's one track mind.
In addition to the Samsung 500 here in Ft. Worth, there's another little sporting event taking place down the road in San Antonio this weekend called the Final Four. But don't bother asking Jimmie Johnson who is going to win - one curious scribe already did - because the reigning two-time Cup champ doesn't even know who is playing besides Kansas.
"I'll say two things, one is my publicist [Kristine Curley], I obviously know who she wants to root for, but the other side of it is I don't know any other team that's in the final four," Johnson said. "I have not been paying attention, I've been completely out of the basketball loop, and I'm totally serious. I've been focused on driving race cars. I've been testing my butt off, we tested five or six days in the last ten so I've been thoroughly committed to motorsports and listening to my publicist tell me how Kansas is gonna win."
Jimmie, here's a hint on the team facing Kansas in today's semifinal round: You live in Charlotte, in the great state of North Carolina, which happens to boast a baby-blue basketball juggernaut called the Tar Heels.
There's two other teams playing, but we don't want to strain your racing-consumed brain and muddle things up by talking about UCLA and Memphis. Just know that either Kansas or North Carolina will be playing for the national title on Monday night, and it should represent some serious must-see TV.
Will you tune in?
"I'll watch it. Hopefully I'm not testing Monday night or Monday. We've been so busy at the track, but I love any playoffs. It doesn't matter what the sport is, I certainly want to check it out."
Do so, but if push comes to shove and you somehow find yourself in a race car on Monday night, ask Ms. Kansas to fill you in on all the details.
"She's gonna tell me about it anyways," Johnson said.
