Good guy finishes first
Feb
18
NASCAR’s much-ballyhooed 50th running of the Daytona 500 proved a few things, among them that Ryan Newman is alive and well as a competitor and that the sanctioning body doesn’t rig races.
Surely, if it did, Dale Earnhardt Jr. would be appearing with David Letterman tonight instead of Newman. Earnhardt Jr. had set the table nicely with wins in the Budweiser Shootout and his Gatorade Duel 150, but it was Newman who cleaned up yesterday.
Good for him. For all the talk of allowing drivers to be themselves, Newman seems to have no trouble in that area. He’s sincere, quick-witted and the possessor of a dry sense of humor that might not come across in TV land.
His idea of a posse seemingly includes wife Krissie and their four dogs – Digger, Mopar, Harley and Socks.
Newman’s love of animals, fishing and the great outdoors help him recalibrate, to use a word he’s used in the past. He’ll need a healthy dose of all three after the whirlwind week he faces now as Daytona 500 champion.
