Can The Glen entertain again?
Aug
8
We need another race like last year’s at Watkins Glen, perhaps the most entertaining in all of 2007. Great theater. Plenty of drama. Hopefully, we’re in line for an encore performance on Sunday.
Tony Stewart won (hard to believe we’re coming up on a full calendar year since his last victory), but that’s not what most folks will remember.
You had Kevin Harvick and Juan Pablo Montoya doing their best “let’s-get-ready-to-rumble” impersonations, with two of NASCAR’s fieriest drivers squaring off in a helmet-grabbing, shoving match that had the potential for real fisticuffs.
You had a fan visiting Matt Kenseth’s car in search of an autograph – during a red-flag period.
Ah, dude, I’m working right now.
In the end, you had the best road-course racer in NASCAR spin while leading with two laps to go.
“Yeah, I’ve had many nightmares about Turn 1 at Watkins Glen,” Jeff Gordon admitted a week ago at Pocono.
Stewart picked up the pieces and a victory.
More from Gordon:
“I don’t know if we were going to win that race. Tony was a little better than us. I beat myself up more for the fact that we should have put
him in the pressure situation to have to make the move rather than take ourselves out of it and just give it away.”
Looking forward to the sequel on Sunday.

Aug 8, 2008 at 11:19 PMThe Glen always seems far more interesting than Sonoma. Adding spice this year is the weather forecast. 20% chance of rain for Saturday and 50% chance for Sunday. If it does rain I hope NASCAR brings out the rain tires again. If F1, GTP, GT, etc drivers can race well in rain why can't NASCAR drivers? That's a question I hear very often from detractors. It's usually preceded or followed by something like "NASCAR drivers are (insert your favorite derogatory term). If one drop of rain hits the track they head to the garage." If NASCAR wants to gain widespread acceptance among fans of types of racing it will have to race in rain on road courses.

Aug 11, 2008 at 11:26 AMThese commenters obviously need to go watch a race at Richmond, Martinsville, Darlington or Talledega. If you think that was the best race of the year, you need to go to some of the other tracks. However, it's whatever turns you on. HA HA!
