Where's the patience at BMS?
Aug
25
So Carl Edwards is suddenly the good guy for punting Kyle Busch out of the way en route to winning the Sharpie 500, huh?
Funny how just one night earlier, Brad Keselowski, running second to Clint Bowyer, waited until Bowyer slipped before – without making contact – he darted past for the Nationwide Series win.
Until recently, contact was about the only way for any driver to get by another competitor at Bristol Motor Speedway. The new track surface, however, allows passing on the high and low sides, as long as the trailing car is fast enough to pull off the move. And the driver is willing to be patient.
• Favoritism? NASCAR officials were right to call Busch to the hauler after he “rubbed” Edwards’ Ford on the cool-down lap. But they erred terribly when they failed to bring in Edwards for a chat as well. Both drivers were guilty of running into each other after the checkered flag. Both admitted as much afterwards.
• Get in line: A development group has announced plans for a multiuse race facility to be built in Big Lake, Minn., an area located
northwest of Minneapolis.
International Motorsports Entertainment and Development Corp. recently unveiled renderings for a 5/8th mile oval track with an initial
seating capacity of 90,000. A 1-mile flat oval, quarter-mile dragstrip and 3/8th-mile oval dirt track would also be included in the project.
But the chances that the facility, should it actually be built, could land a Cup date are slim at best. At least under the sport’s current
landscape.
Las Vegas Motor Speedway is seeking a second Cup date, and Kentucky Speedway officials are miffed because their track can’t get one. NASCAR hasn’t lost interest in racing in the Northwest region of the country, or near New York City.
That being the case, one has to wonder if the Big Lake project is a wise move.
