Bad blood good for sport
Oct

CONCORD, N.C. – So Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards have a little shoving match over in the Nationwide garage Thursday morning.
What’s the big deal? Anybody get hurt? Anybody run home and tell their sponsor?
Geez.
If you ask me, the sport needs more of that kind of thing, when drivers settle their differences and then go on about their business on the race track.
NASCAR, to its credit, has taken a “hands-off” approach to the Harvick/Edwards situation, and bless the sanctioning body for that. If it spills over to the track, well, that’s another story.
Part of the disconnect between the sport’s fans and drivers in the last few years is a result of the sport being overrun with guys like P.C. Driver.
The guy who always has the politically correct response, always mentions the names of his sponsors when he’s being interviewed, and is about as interesting as a turnip. Hasn’t been in a confrontation since the fifth grade when his mom told him he absolutely could NOT wear sneakers to church.
The fans realize everyone isn’t going to be quick with a quip, offer interesting insight or just be plain fun for have around. Nothing wrong with that.
But there’s nothing wrong with guys being themselves either.
And if that means getting in another competitors face now and then, I can’t imagine how that would be bad for the sport.

Oct 14, 2008 at 7:08 AMI too am sick of the standard answer, why bother interviewing them really. It's not like we don't KNOW who their sponsors are. It's almost like watching an awards show on TV, and we all know they don't have the ratings they once did. I agree that the people behind the scene deserve a LOT of the credit for getting the car in a position to win a victory but half the pleasure of the sport is the personalities and if you never see that the drivers have one then we might as well just pop in a video game and make our own fun. (imho!)

Oct 16, 2008 at 7:20 AMI am wondering how Harvick and Edwards being called into the Nascar trailer to settle things is a "hands off" approach.
