A few surprises after the confetti settles
May

CONCORD, N.C. – Sure, Kasey Kahne’s win in Saturday night’s all-star race was quite the surprise. But actually, there were a few other things that stood out once the confetti had settled.
Greg Biffle finished second, but folks have been expecting him to be up front all season. For one reason or another, it hasn’t happened.
Roush Fenway Racing teammate Matt Kenseth? Some have already written the former champ off for 2008, but Kenseth looked competitive in racing his way to a third-place finish.
Sam Hornish Jr. raced his way into the program, bounced off the wall a time or two, and still managed to bring his Penske Racing Dodge home in seventh place, one spot behind teammate Ryan Newman.
OK, maybe those weren’t “monumental” surprises. But still, they were nice to see. As was AJ Allmendinger’s win in the qualifying race. The Red Bull Racing driver didn’t disappear in the feature, either, hanging in for a 17th-place finish.
But where there are surprises, there are also disappointments. Toss Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch in that category. Both led, Busch in what has quickly become his typical dominating fashion, before engine problems struck both Joe Gibbs Racing drivers.
And where were those Richard Childress Racing drivers? Kevin Harvick finished 11th for top honors for the group. Clint Bowyer (18th) and Jeff Burton (20th) might as well have taken the night off.
It wasn’t a points race. And more than a few drivers probably left Lowe’s Motor Speedway glad that it wasn’t.
