If Tony Stewart is intent on buying into a Sprint Cup team and becoming a team owner – and it certainly appears that he is – why not buy Petty Enterprises?
Stewart wants to buy a team so he can remain in the sport when his driving days are over. Petty Enterprises is already in talks with an investment group and is in desperate need of a partner to invest in the team and help turn the struggling organization around.
Nothing could be better for Stewart’s image and his future in racing than if he became the man who saved Petty Enterprises.
Stewart will likely buy into a Chevrolet team, given his close ties to the manufacturers. But surely Petty Enterprises would switch to Chevy if it meant landing Stewart. It raced Pontiacs for General Motors for years, and the big switch to Dodge eight years ago certainly hasn’t helped.
And Stewart would be the best driver the organization has had since King Richard was behind the wheel of his Petty blue No. 43.
Stewart would have to get some guarantees, of course, that the money invested in the team would be spent on expansion and on acquiring all the assets and tools needed to make Petty Enterprises a competitive team again.
But if Petty is going to make such a commitment, why not make it with a two-time champion who is a serious racer with the competitive fire to do what it takes to win.
Stewart is already a big supporter and contributor to Kyle Petty’s Victory Junction Gang Camp, so he already has a close relationship with the Pettys.
Why not take it one step further and make Stewart part owner of Petty Enterprises?
If anyone can give the Pettys the talent, the commitment and the know-how to become winners again, it is Stewart.
