Landon Cassill is just one heck of a friendly guy

CONCORD, N.C. – How many NASCAR drivers do you know who would stop by the media center just to hang out?
There's at least one – Nationwide Series driver Landon Cassill.
Cassill – my former blog-war nemesis (see http://www.scenedaily.com/opinions/blogs/jeffgluck/ for details) – is 19 but media-savvy beyond his years. If I were a driver, I'd think it would be a pretty smart idea to make good contacts with reporters. Then they'd be more eager to write stories or blogs such as this one.
It's doubtful Cassill is just doing it to further his career, though. He's a naturally friendly guy.
Cassill spent the first part of his day in a news conference alongside JR Motorsports team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. to introduce Unilever (whose brands include Ragu, Hellmann's, Lipton and Klondike ice cream) as the new sponsor of the No. 5 car.
The Iowa native will drive a part-time schedule for the team next year, much like he has done this season.
But with Jimmie Johnson running the No. 5 car in tonight's Nationwide race, Cassill had a bit of free time on his hands. So he dropped by the media center for a visit.
If I were advising up-and-coming drivers, I'd tell them to make themselves known to reporters like Cassill does.
Only one suggestion for Cassill: Next time, bring a supply of Klondike bars with you.
