Commission should continue upholding penalties

Jun 10
A short time ago, the National Stock Car Racing Commission upheld the penalties for Haas CNC Racing after their seemingly blatant attempt to cheat at Charlotte.

Good.

As NASCAR increases its punishments for teams who choose to mess with the new car, it needs to keep winning with the appeals board when teams protest the penalties.

That will allow officials to police cheaters the way they want, even if it means setting new standards for the severity of their punishments.

According to the commission's release, Haas CNC "did not contest the rules violation, but argued that the penalties were too severe for the infractions."

Basically it sounds like they said, "We cheated. But why did you have to be so harsh?"

What's amazing about this situation is that even though NASCAR has said a zillion times it will get more and more severe with the penalties, everyone from the Haas CNC camp acted surprised.

Specifically, Haas CNC was upset that NASCAR took the extra step of suspending the car chief on both of the illegal cars for six weeks, alongside the typical crew-chief suspensions.

Too bad. What did you expect?

Memo to the garage: Stop messing with the new car, and you won't have these problems. And when you get caught, forcing NASCAR to come down even harder than before, spare us the outrage and the shock.

I tried TWICE to comment but, since I dared disagree with Mr.Gluck, and attempted to point out the interesting HISTORY side of "creative engineering", as well as the boring side of -"Everybody equal" - my comments were apparently TWICE deemed inappropriate. I'll remember that in the future when I chose what columns to bother paying any attention to.
