Darlington tamed me

May 11
DARLINGTON, S.C. – On Saturday evening at Darlington Raceway, I did what few people ever will.

I rode in the backseat of a Dodge pace car with two fellow NASCAR writers and former NASCAR driver Brett Bodine.

Let's just say that I'm glad Bodine was behind the wheel and not me or the other writers.

Thrilling as they were, two laps around the famed Darlington Raceway seemed like an eternity. Sort of paradoxical considering we topped out at 120 mph!

Yes, I know. That's snail's pace compared with the speed at which Sprint Cup drivers flew around the egg-shaped oval in Saturday night's Dodge Challenger 500.

In fact, most of my fellow media members who did the ride didn't seem as shaken. Maybe they're used to this.

I'm not.

It's fair to say I would do the ride all over again given the chance - but as for me and my sweaty palms, 120 mph was plenty fast enough.
