I wanted Mark Martin in victory lane at Phoenix. Winning any Sprint Cup race is difficult, but running on a limited schedule just means you have fewer opportunities to get it done.
As Martin continues to march closer to retirement (real retirement – the kind when you don’t run any races at all) I hope for him to not just remain competitive, but to win. I have a soft spot for “veteran” drivers - seasoned not by a couple years in NASCAR but by decades.
Martin’s interview after the Subway Fresh Fit 500 showed his disappointment in the call for a green-flag pit stop. But he expressed his frustration in the same gracious manner that has endeared him to so many fans. Martin, truly humble, always passes praise to others and accepts responsibility as a team.
I want to see Mark Martin win not only because he is a phenomenal competitor but because I like and respect him as a person. Phoenix was by no means Martin’s last chance at victory, but, man, I would have loved to seen him take the checkered flag.
