Kids use NASCAR to get what they want

May 30
Like any parent, I have sharpened and honed my skills of negations. I am particularly artful when it comes to “convincing” my children they do or do not want to do something as a way to steer them to the choice I secretly want.

Well, the apple doesn’t fall far from the manipulation tree. Recently, my children were viewing a DVD about planning a Disney World vacation. They latched onto a quick 15-second segment regarding the Richard Petty Driving Experience that is available at the park. The rest of the day, my sweet selfless negotiators pushed their desire for a Disney Vacation as, “We just want Mom to be able to drive a NASCAR.”

At such a young age, my kids know that anything about racing gives them leverage in their arguments of persuasion with me. Whether it’s buying fruit snacks shaped like race cars or a candy bar with a small photo of a driver, my kids understand my weak spot.

And you know what, I’m OK with that.
