Jarrett's run emotional for fans, too

Feb 14
The second Gatorade Duel was about one thing for me. Dale Jarrett making it into his final Daytona 500. With the champions provisional going to Kurt Busch, Dale needed to race his way in. My nerves were shot as the field was halted with two laps to go after Patrick Carpentier hit the wall. The thought of having to restart made my stomach sink.

But while the cars were waiting for the track to be cleaned, messages from other drivers to Jarrett were relayed through the broadcasters. Words of support from teammate and car owner Michael Waltrip came first followed by Mark Martin, and even Kevin Harvick. Knowing others were just as determined he make the race showed a level of respect one can only earn. No doubt about it – I was choked up. And finally, to watch Dale Jarrett cross the finish line and know for certain he would race on Sunday left me relieved and emotional.

A large brown UPS sign reading “Thanks Dale” summed up my feelings perfectly. Good luck on Sunday. You have friends and fans and we all wish you the best.
