Glad to not be that guy
Mar
5
I watched the tire roll across pit road during the Las Vegas race and the television replay that showed a member of Carl Edwards’ No. 99 crew highly annoyed as a media cameraman, who had accidentally interfered with the catching of the tire, hightailed it out of the pit area.
Whether you agree or disagree with NASCAR’s decision not to penalize the 99 team, there is one point regarding the cameraman that will merit little debate: I’m glad I wasn’t that guy at that moment.
Fox announcers told viewers only about a zillion times that the cameraman was not part of their crew. With the media already highly scrutinized, it’s understandable why the broadcasters wanted to separate themselves from that blunder.
But the soft spot in me feels for the camera guy. I can only imagine the incident was the talk of the media center. And imagine having to face your boss after that. There’s no denying what happened. It was, after all, caught on tape.
Don’t misunderstand me. The media has a job to do, but it should in no way interfere with the ability of the pit crew to do its job as well.
Loose tires can be very dangerous on pit road or anywhere for that matter. But, this time, no harm, no foul – just a learning lesson for every media member down on pit road.

Mar 6, 2008 at 5:05 AMHi Carolyn! I felt badly for everyone concerned. The cameraman was probably just overzealous in doing his job and didn't realize that he was putting that pit stop in jeopardy. It looks, after watching NASCAR Now last night, that the team did a swell, if unintended, job of bringing woe to themselves.
