Prices at the pump make race tickets less affordable
May
1
I just about fell over when I placed the gas nozzle back on the pump and turned around to see the price of what I had just pumped. For the first time in my life, the total cost to fuel my automobile exceeded one hundred dollars ($104 to be exact).
Holy cow. I substitute teach part time in our school district and one whole day of chasing kindergarteners and painting popsicle sticks would not cover the cost of a full tank of gas.
NASCAR tracks should be worried. Humpy Wheeler has taken notice and imparted some changes at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. An all-you-can-eat-ticket is an awesome idea and a burnout contest could be fun. But will it be enough?
How about an overall drop in ticket prices? Or merchandise I don’t have to refinance my home to afford? Since gas prices are not likely to move south anytime soon, cutting prices elsewhere for a race weekend may be the only way to make a trip to the track affordable for many of us fans.

May 2, 2008 at 6:39 AMI gotta agree with you there. I had a ticket for the All Star race and decided NOT to go because the travel expenses were going to be too high. Plus, in my opinion, the racing hasn't been so exciting that I'm willing to spend the money on gas to go to a race. I'll follow it on the radio instead, not as much fun as being there, but I'm not that big a fan of "parity" or IROC cars.

May 2, 2008 at 3:47 PMDitto. Michigan is off the table this year. That's a 6 hour drive one way and I don't even want to do the math on that with gas where it is now, and where it might be when those races come up on the schedule. Then you have hotel, meals, and tolls on top of that, plus anything you buy at the track. Affordability is beginning to go by the wayside.

May 3, 2008 at 1:24 PMWhile I enjoyed the Daytona 500, it will be my last for quite some time. I go for the weekend and it is kinda hard to justify over $1,000 for it. Ticket alone is $185, Add in airline ticket ($400), hotel($150), rental car ($100) & food and it's easy to crest a grand! Until others come to the conclusion that it is just too much, ticket prices will continue to climb.
