A fond farewell
Mar
17
I have to choke back the tears each time I see the UPS commercial with Dale Jarrett hanging up the keys. Sunday’s Bristol race had DJ doing it for real. What an emotional day for his fans.
There are so many ways to retire. Rusty Wallace had a year long tribute with “Rusty’s Last Call”. Bill Elliot took the quiet path, and Mark Martin is weaning himself out on his own terms. With Jarrett, it was short but sweet. And there is no place better for your final points race than Bristol.
The tributes to Jarrett before the race were touching. “Thanks Dale” spelled out in the grandstands was pretty darn cool. I had that lump in my throat watching his family standing on pit road and knowing his retirement is theirs as well. And Ned Jarrett waving the green flag … I need a tissue.
While DJ has “signed, sealed, and delivered” his driving days, I look forward to hearing his voice on ESPN. Classy guy, classic act career.

Mar 18, 2008 at 8:11 PMThere is no doubt Dale went out with some class. He should call Michael Waltrip,Kyle Petty,Mark Martin,Kenny Wallace and a few others and start a golf league. They are decent people but the sport has left Them.
