A journey back to NASCAR country, part 1
Jul
4
If I haven’t blogged in a while, there’s a good reason for that. I’m moving across the country… literally. We’ve waved goodbye to our neighbors and sent the household goods on their way to our new home in Georgia.
Now starts the fun part - a 21-day journey with my husband and three kids pulling a camper across the terrain both beautiful and at times monotonous.
The kids are looking for signs of wildlife which so far have included one moose (alive), three moose (dead), a porcupine, two black bears, a grizzly, a herd of wild horses, and several cliff-dwelling sheep (just to hit the highlights).
I, on the other hand, have decided to take this time to ponder the deeper meaning of NASCAR. Hmm ... or maybe I’d better just take the less philosophical approach and blog about how and when NASCAR will surface during this journey that will eventually take me south to the heart of NASCAR country.
Passing the first few days of the trip in the rugged Yukon Territory, I figured NASCAR was as likely to show up as a toilet that actually flushes.
But as we filled my husband’s truck with diesel by the liter and watched a wild bison heard of nearly 100 clog the road beside us, I discovered my first sign of NASCAR. The store owner wore a No. 8 Army hat. I was amazed.
The bison were cool but the fact this guy had a “current” NASCAR hat was fairly impressive as well, especially considering nothing else in the joint looked like it had been acquired since 1982. But, apparently, a friend had picked the cap up for him at Daytona this spring.
The hat was filthy ... not in a way that makes you cringe but the way that showed he loves the hat and wears it everyday.
Bison and a Canadian in a DEI cap ... not a bad way to start the trip.

Jul 10, 2008 at 10:58 AMHi! Since it's now July 10, I'll guess that you've made it to Georgia. I hope your trip went well. I really enjoyed your column on the signs that fans hoist behind the NASCAR Raceday guys and want you to know that I thought the "DRUNK" sign was pretty stupid and spoke badly for the person carrying it. So, I hope you're all well and unpacked by now. Linda
