MEXICO CITY – There is evidence that NASCAR has returned to Mexico City as the Nationwide Series haulers rest peacefully in the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez garage. They were scheduled to arrive at 1 a.m. – the least traffic around, the better for the big haulers winding through the streets of a huge city.
At the track this morning, there are people jogging and biking around the winding road course and some sort of karate class going on in the grass by one of the turns. The road course is part of a public park, and there likely will be soccer games and other events going on in the infield at least today and tomorrow. A little later this morning, there will be the annual track blessing before practice begins.
The NASCAR drivers don’t hit the track until Friday, but the Grand-Am road-racing cars (the ones that compete in the Rolex 24 At Daytona) fire their engines this afternoon.
The Mexico City trip is not an easy one for teams and NASCAR, and there is still certainly a mixed feeling among competitors and crew members on whether this is a worthwhile and fun trip. The experience of competing in a foreign city and experiencing a foreign culture can be unnerving and exhilarating at the same time.
But the show always is interesting, with a variety of talent levels among the drivers. It always is intriguing to see how the fans here react to the NASCAR racing. As the sun rises above the grandstands here at a track where Formula One used to race, the anticipation begins for what this weekend will bring.
