There is no rest for the weary.
The Nationwide Series teams got back in the wee hours Monday morning or late Monday afternoon depending on whether they took chartered or commercial flights back to the states.
And now they have to be at Talladega by Wednesday night. The haulers get parked at the track at 7 p.m. EDT Wednesday and the crews begin inspection at 7:30 a.m. EDT Thursday – forcing most teams to head down Wednesday.
NASCAR needs to allow plenty of time for inspection, and looking at the schedule, it’s tough to see an alternative – unless NASCAR asks the Sprint Cup teams to come in and practice Thursday, leaving time on Saturday so the Nationwide teams can qualify and race on the same day. You know what? That wouldn’t be a bad idea.
If it’s good enough for the Nationwide guys to qualify Thursday and then have an off day Friday at Texas, then why not have the Sprint Cup guys practice Thursday, qualify Friday and then have an off day Saturday at Talladega? Would people really not come to the Nationwide race on Saturday if there was no Cup qualifying to watch?
For now, the Nationwide crews will just be a weary bunch as they attempt to provide entertainment for fans from Mexico City to Talladega, Ala.
But in the future, NASCAR might want to give the Nationwide guys a break. It would be a nice gesture of thanks for bringing the sport to Mexico City by giving them an extra day at home before heading to Talladega.
