NASCAR should move test session to Atlanta
Jul
16
Talking to a Goodyear official about the upcoming tire test at Atlanta next week, it seemed pretty obvious to me what NASCAR’s next step should be as far as making sure it has the right tire combination for October.
NASCAR needs to move its test scheduled for Sept. 23-24 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway to Atlanta.
Teams have already spent two days testing and two race weekends (All-Star and 600 weekend) at Lowe’s. There’s no reason for them to go back there again.
But there’s plenty of reason to go to Atlanta, where cars usually run speeds faster than at any other track. That makes it hard on tires, especially with the new NASCAR race car.
No one wants a repeat of what happened last March, when drivers were saying it was the worst decision on tires in a long time.
A test would accomplish two things: It would allow teams significant time to figure out the correct cambers and weight distribution in the car to handle the new tires that Goodyear has chosen for the event. It also would let NASCAR know if there is the potential for tire issues and if Goodyear should make an emergency decision and change the tires again for October.
NASCAR could even schedule the test from 1-9 p.m. the first day and from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. the next day, requiring teams to spend only one night in Atlanta and be home for dinner after the second day.
Goodyear and NASCAR cannot afford to have another tire debacle at Atlanta. Moving the test from Charlotte to there would be a step in the right direction.

Jul 18, 2008 at 11:14 AMIf they tested Atlanta they could get the handle on the car there and actually put on a good race like they used to there (2000, 2001, 2005).
