MEXICO CITY – The race in Mexico City always has some controversy and always has strange twists and turns because not all of the players are accustomed to the Nationwide Series and how the races develop on road courses.
Fuel mileage, “lucky dog” rules and when the caution light comes on can throw those not used to it for a twist.
While many of the drivers who qualified well Saturday are used to NASCAR racing, they certainly do add to the drama for the race Sunday.
Colin Braun, who ripped around this course in a sports car last year, is on the pole for just his third series start. Scott Pruett, a tested veteran who has yearned for that NASCAR victory for so long, starts beside him in a car that Juan Pablo Montoya drove a year ago to the win.
The guy with maybe the least road-course experience, Carl Edwards, starts third while Marcos Ambrose, who probably should have won the race at Montreal last year, starts fourth.
And then Row 3 consists of Boris Said and Kyle Busch. Who will give room when they need to get single file going into the turn? That will be a sight to see.
And don’t forget hometown favorite Adrian Fernandez, who will start in the rear of the field as David Green qualified the car while Fernandez was racing in Long Beach, Calif., on Saturday.
The race should have a great atmosphere. And the storylines on the track should be good, too.
