Kyle Busch is a Cup contender

There was a little bit of talk following the California races wondering if Kyle Busch might try to win two titles this season.

He leads the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series standings and the Sprint Cup standings and sits second in the Nationwide Series standings.

None of that means a whole lot right now.

As far as Cup goes, he doesn’t really lead the standings. Ryan Newman and Carl Edwards lead the standings because as of right now, they have a win – and so when the standings are revised after Richmond in September, they would be ahead of Busch.

Busch currently plans on running about 30 Nationwide and 14 truck races. He isn’t going to increase that by too much. There is no way he can run enough truck races to win a title, and he doesn’t have a big-name sponsor to please to try to run more Nationwide events.

Enough drivers are running all 35 races that Busch can’t skip four or five and win the title.

So, of those planning to run the most events, Edwards leads the Nationwide standings by seven points over David Reutimann.

In the trucks, Todd Bodine leads Johnny Benson by five points.

If we’re talking about Kyle Busch, the talk should center around his potentially winning a Cup title. And if he keeps running as well as he
has, then there will be a lot of talk about that possibility this year.
