IRL experience no help

Jun 21
SONOMA, Calif. – If there ever was an indication that going to a track one has raced at before, even if not in a stock car, is a big help, that myth was busted this weekend at Infineon Raceway.

The IndyCar Series visits Infineon Raceway, so it could have been theorized that guys such as Sam Hornish Jr. and Dario Franchitti should do OK at the track. Franchitti placed third in the IRL race here least year while Hornish was fifth.

But obviously that hasn’t been the case so far this weekend. Franchitti failed to make the field. Hornish found himself turned around twice during practice Saturday and ranking 36th overall.

These cars are just too different, especially the braking, for drivers to be able to use their past open-wheel experiences here to help.

Hornish just might as well forget everything he knows about this place from the past and just focus on what he’s learning this weekend. Franchitti has to forget about his past, starting with not even qualifying for this race.
