Coca-Cola 600 could be exciting race

May 20
Just because the all-star race bordered on a snoozefest, that doesn’t mean the Coca-Cola 600 will be just as uneventful this weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

The 600 is not only four times the length of the all-star race, it also will have 43 cars instead of 24. With those 19 extra cars, there is more of a chance of accidents that will bring out cautions to bunch the field. There also is a better chance of the leader hitting lapped traffic, which means that a five-second lead could disappear quickly.

There will be more drivers using different pit strategies, thus likely giving a better mix of cars with old tires and those with fresh tires throughout the field.

The 600 race is a marathon and a strategy event, and not a sprint to the finish. Watching the marathon and its strategy play out gives the Sprint Cup Series’ longest race of the year potential to have its share of exciting moments.
