Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s victory this weekend at Martinsville will put to rest all the naysayers worried about Hendrick Motorsports.
There’s a tendency to believe that some trends will continue forever. Entering this season, many people believed the Hendrick teams would continue winning every other race, something they did last season (18 wins in 36 races).
But that was an historic pace, and even the best organization in NASCAR cannot maintain that type of performance for long.
Hendrick Motorsports’ edge on the rest of the sport, particularly in terms of NASCAR’s new car, has been narrowed, but probably not eliminated. Hendrick still has good leadership, plenty of resources and talent behind the wheel.
The team’s newest driver, Earnhardt Jr., has paced the Hendrick organization in four of five races this year. Just a feeling here, but Earnhardt Jr. has always been strong at Martinsville (seven top-fives in 16 races) and he’s eager to put a 67-race winless streak behind him, so don’t be surprised to see him break through into the win column this weekend.
