I wonder …
As I sit here, waiting for the season to start, here are some things I wonder:
• Where did they find the security guard involved in the alleged altercation with Kasey Kahne at Homestead-Miami Speedway? How is it possible that this guy, who was guarding the drivers’ motorhome compound, somehow did not recognize one of NASCAR’s most recognizable drivers, who as a helpful hint, was wearing his drivers suit?
• Why did the car of tomorrow have to look so goofy? It looks like a slot-car racer.
• What happens if 73-year-old James Hylton makes the Daytona 500? That would certainly amuse those people who scoff at the notion that NASCAR drivers are athletes. My bet for the 73-year-old driver who could one day make the race, and also win it – Mark Martin.
• What happens if Dale Earnhardt Jr. doesn’t make the Chase? Who gets the blame – Junior, crew chief Tony Eury Jr. or team owner Rick Hendrick?
• Will we make it the entire Cup season without seeing Paris Hilton at a NASCAR-related function? Let’s see, if we can get through the two race weekends at California Speedway, we should be OK. But that’s a big “if.”
• Why does the NFL have playoffs and a Super Bowl? Wouldn’t it be fairer just to give the league championship to the team with the best record during the season (the way NASCAR used to crown its champion)? Seriously, will all NASCAR fans one day learn to appreciate the Chase? Or will it be NASCAR’s version of baseball’s designated hitter rule, which still infuriates purists in that sport 36 years after it was instituted?
• Which teams will be out of business by midseason? Without sponsorship, several teams appear to be in dire straits. Will sponsors step up and save the day?
• How does the current testing format at Daytona help anything – other than the coffers of the speedway and local businesses?
