Kyle Busch’s agent expects driver to become Truck series owner; driver still on fence

Kyle Busch appears to be considering an ownership role in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2010.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Kyle Busch’s agent believes the driver will “make the plunge” and become a team owner in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with multiple entries next season, although the driver himself doesn’t seem as certain that it will happen in time for 2010.
Agent Jeff Dickerson said Busch faces a Dec. 1 deadline to make a final decision on whether to bring Kyle Busch Motorsports into the series.
“It’s really in his court right now, and he’s got to make the decision here in the next week,” Dickerson said of Busch. “But I would say if he makes that plunge, which I believe he will, there will be something official here in the next couple weeks.”
Busch wasn’t as optimistic when talking Monday at a lunch prior to the joint awards banquet for the Nationwide and Truck series tonight.
“I think it’s too late right now,” Busch said. “[Dickerson] keeps thinking there’s still a chance to do something.”
Busch has been negotiating to purchase the assets of Xpress Motorsports, since the team’s current driver, Brian Scott, is moving to the Nationwide Series next season.
“He has run all the numbers,” Dickerson said of Busch. “That’s a perfect turnkey operation where he can just hop in and work out of the shop. So whether it’s equipment or sponsors or with Toyota, we’ve done all the legwork that we can, and it’s now in his court. He’s making those decisions right now.”
Dickerson said Busch’s potential Truck series entry would consist of “two or more” teams, and all the due diligence has already been completed. KBM currently fields Late Model cars and is in the process of completing a new building that could house a Truck team. Busch indicated Monday that he wanted that shop to be ready for his foray into the series.
“If I had a building, you guys would have an easier reason to me having a [Truck] team,” Busch said. “I was supposed to start a Truck team last year, but the building has never gotten done.”
Being a team owner in a NASCAR national series is something that Busch has looked at.
“Kyle has seriously explored going down this path,” Dickerson said. “The Truck series is just a nice, natural step. Kyle already has a very successful grass-roots program, running Late Models and giving kids opportunities. He’s worked really hard.”
Busch would run a partial schedule in one of the Truck entries. Dickerson said fielding multiple trucks makes sense “the way that the business model is set in the Nationwide and Truck series.”
Obviously if Busch starts a truck team, it would run Toyotas. Where would Busch get his engines? J.D. Gibbs, president of the Joe Gibbs Racing team Busch drives for in the Sprint Cup and Nationwide series, said he would make Busch “a sweetheart deal.”
“That’s probably 10 grand more than I could get anywhere else,” Busch said with a laugh.

Nov 24, 2009 at 3:18 AMDanica Patrick wants no part of a heavy truck, Nationwide car or 'Cup series stockcar. Driving one of those bad boys, as compared to the feather light open wheel car, with power steering a 92 lbs. elderly grandmother could steer, would be a real eye opener for Patrick. Or, the first time Patrick wrecks a stock car trying to qualify, she'd quit on the spot.

Nov 24, 2009 at 9:26 AMThis just might be a good idea. Danica should start in trucks first but that's just my opinion. She would more likely be a winner there. I just wonder if Kyle has the maturity to do this and not jump on his drivers if they don't win every race. He get's down on himself and his teams so much when he runs in second. This year it was said that Kyle raced in to many series and didn't focus enough on the Cup series. This would add a lot to his platter to be so young. However if he can pull it off, it would be a good investment for him and help the truck series as well.

Nov 24, 2009 at 10:42 AMAs noted Kyle is already a team owner, handles it well, and I applaud this Truck addition... as long as the deal is ready to go. Will he buy the rights to the number 51? Glad he's giving it careful thought. Kudos also for Kyle wanting to put his money back into NASCAR and for preserving/adding jobs.

Nov 24, 2009 at 12:53 PMIt's just amazing the absolute BS that people talk when it comes to Kyle. People really think they know him, or really know what's best for him. The kid is smart and can handle his own. He doesn't need his hand held like some other drivers I won't mention. Kyle can handle pressure very well...
