NASCAR has replaced Mansfield Motorsports Park with Iowa Speedway on the 2009 Camping World Truck Series schedule.
The Truck series had raced at the half-mile Mansfield oval in each of the last five years and was scheduled for a May 23 event in 2009, but the track requested that “the event be moved from its track because of its inability to meet the requirements necessary to remain a NASCAR sanctioned facility,” according to a NASCAR news release issued Wednesday.
The Truck series will now compete Sept. 5 – the Saturday of Labor Day weekend – on the 0.875-mile oval at Iowa. The Nationwide and Cup Series are in Atlanta that weekend.
“It is always exciting to go to a new venue and show the fans what the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is all about,” NASCAR Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O’Donnell said in a statement. “The Midwest has some of our sport’s most loyal fans and Iowa Speedway produces some incredible racing.”
The race will come about a month after Iowa plays host to its first Nationwide Series event, scheduled for Aug. 1.
“We are extremely pleased to continue our strong relationship with NASCAR with the awarding of yet another NASCAR series race to Iowa Speedway,” Iowa Speedway CEO Stan Clement said. “We know from past experience that fans here in the Midwest will support this exciting new event.”
Mansfield Motorsports Park management posted a notice on its Web site.
“Due to the economic times that we are all facing, Mansfield Motorsports Park will not be hosting the 2009 NASCAR Truck Race,” the track said in its statement. “We will begin processing refunds immediately. Please accept our apologies.”

Dec 17, 2008 at 8:32 PMTrucks are rollin in the Midwest, first they announced they were going to Chicagoland, and now Iowa. As a Midwest resident it is cool to see.

Dec 17, 2008 at 9:46 PMI liked Mansfield, and when I read the headline I thought NASCAR had moved it without the track agreeing. At least that isn't the case.
I would think that it would have made more sense to have the Trucks race at Iowa on the same weekend, though. I do understand though that the logistics of changing everything now would not be worth it, but that just seems to be a good idea. I look forward to seeing what Iowa has to offer in 2009.

Dec 18, 2008 at 1:54 PMI live in NJ so, going to that race is out but, I will be watching on TV. From what races that have been raced there this will be a great race at a great new track. Wish there were more like it.

Dec 18, 2008 at 2:30 PMWhy not a cup race in Iowa. Perfect smaller track that produces good racing and not boring follow the leader races like California and Michigan.

Dec 18, 2008 at 6:29 PMRusty got another race...i like the trak, not another 1 1/2 mile snoozer...what i have seen on tv is that they actually race there...but...would a Cup race put me to sleep with that race strategy of saving the car for the last 50 laps?...

Dec 18, 2008 at 7:49 PMnow i get it..."The realignment of the race was a result of Mansfield's request that the event be moved from its track because of its inability to meet the requirements necessary to remain a NASCAR sanctioned facility"...does that mean Mansfield no longer wanted to pay NASCAR, just like the Revell model company?...

Dec 19, 2008 at 2:22 PMMaybe a cup race in Iowa would be a great change for fan and not a sleeper. those 1 1/2 and 2 mile tracks just are plain boring that is all i can say. And when is Nascar going to put a road race in the chase. IF YOU CAN'T WIN ON A ROAD COURSE YOU SHOULDN'T BE CHAMPION. Period end of story that would mean GOOD by Jimmy Johnson YEA

Dec 20, 2008 at 1:08 PMIowa Speedway is a nice track with progressive banking that provides for good side by side racing. It's located just off the freeway and has good access roads to make it easier to get in and out of the track. (Contrast that with a track like Michigan.) I don't think they could get a Cup race with the limited number of seats presently available. For a relatively new track, they have put together a nice series of races throughout the summer.
