Darnell wins pole for Daytona truck race
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Erik Darnell was the only driver to crack 176 mph as he captured the pole for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Chevy Silverado 250 on Thursday night at Daytona International Speedway.
Darnell turned a lap of 176.529 mph in his Roush Fenway Racing Ford. Starting on the outside of the front row will be Wyler Racing’s Terry Cook, who posted a lap of 175.853.
Bill Davis Racing’s Mike Skinner, Bobby Hamilton Racing-Virginia’s Stacy Compton and defending series champion Ron Hornaday (Kevin Harvick Inc.) rounded out the top five.
Sixth through 10th were KHI’s Jack Sprague, ThorSport Racing’s Matt Crafton, Germain Racing’s Justin Marks, Roush Fenway’s Colin Braun and MRD Motorsports’ Chad McCumbee.
BDR’s Johnny Benson, who blew a tire and damaged his truck during practice earlier in the day, did not make a qualifying attempt as his team attempted to fix the truck. He will start 35th.
Eight drivers qualified on speed: Sprague, Windward Racing’s Scott Lynch, Billy Ballew Motorsports’ Marc Mitchell, TRG Motorsports’ Mike Bliss, MB Motorsports’ P.J. Jones, Black Bull Racing’s Justin Hobgood, Rosenblum Racing’s Wayne Edwards and Brevak Racing’s Larry Foyt.
One driver missed the field: Reary Racing’s Brian Sockwell.
The Chevy Silverado 250 is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST Friday night.
